Wake County families will have to wait until next month to learn whether they've been accepted into a magnet school or a school that runs on the calendar of their choice.

Last week, the Wake County school board voted to convert Leesville Road elementary and middle schools and Mills Park Elementary School back to a traditional calendar and to open Mills Park Middle School on a traditional calendar schedule.

Letters will be sent this week to parents of 4,500 Leesville Road and Mills Park students to let them know they have until March 18 to apply to stay on the year-round calendar or to try to get into a magnet school.

March 18 was originally scheduled to be the date when families who applied last month to a magnet school, year-round school or traditional-calendar school would find out whether they had been accepted.

But administrators said families will now be notified April 8 to ensure that the Leesville Road and Mills Park families have equal opportunities.

The date for families to accept a seat at a magnet, year-round or traditional calendar school has been pushed back from April 9 to April 28.
