Local football teams prepare for annual Pigskin Preview scrimmage

Wake Forest, Middle Creek, Knightdale and Cardinal Gibbons, which are expected to be ranked in The N&O preseason football top 12, lead the six-team field in Saturday’s annual Pigskin Preview at Wake Forest High.

The first varsity session has Cardinal Gibbons vs. Wake Forest and Panther Creek vs. Knightdale at 6 p.m. The 7 p.m. session matches Knightdale vs. Cardinal Gibbons and Enloe against Middle Creek. The final session pairs Wake Forest vs. Middle Creek and Enloe against Panther Creek at 8 p.m.

All-star coaches: Two Millbrook coaches will lead teams during the N.C. Coaches Association East-West games. Wildcats athletics director and boys basketball coach Scott McInnes is slated to coach the East boys basketball team, and soccer coach Matt Edwards will lead the boys soccer team.

East Wake’s Toni Vick will coach the girls’ basketball East team.

National golf championship: Several area golfers competed in the 45th annual Trusted Choice Big I National Championship this week.

The junior tournament, which is expected to wrap up Thursday at the Country Club of North Carolina at Pinehurst, draws qualifiers from 37 states.

Raleigh’s Michael McMahon and Stephen Franken qualified for the boys tournament, and Jessica Kittleberger qualified for the girls tournament.
