Music grads take home prize
Two students from Valencia College won second place in an international sound-recording competition in New York, beating out contestants from New York University, University of Miami, Savannah College of Art and Design, as well as college students from Germany, Spain, Sweden, Argentina, Colombia, Canada and Japan.
Mélodie Cros and Jonathan Luna, both graduates of Valencia College’s sound and music technology program, won second place in the “Sound for Visual Media” category of the student competition at the 135th convention of the Audio Engineering Society. The awards were announced Oct. 19 in New York.
The worldwide competition is the only such student competition in the Americas.
Cros is a 2006 graduate of Millbrook High School in Raleigh. Luna is a 2009 graduate of Archbishop McCarthy High School near Sunrise, Fla.
Basic training graduation
Army Spec. Kelli M. Oliver has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, Oliver studied the Army mission, history, tradition, core values and physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Oliver is a 2005 graduate of Wakefield High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in 2011 from American Public University in Charles Town, W. Va.
