High School Heroes

High School Heroes is a philanthropic leadership and scholarship/cash awards program for students in ninth through 12th grade. Each student who completes the program will receive a letter of recommendation from Barry Porter, regional executive director of the Red Cross. The top three fundraisers will win cash prizes of $5,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively, and four winners of $500 each. The deadline for registration is Dec. 31. Raleigh Reads

The City of Raleigh Museum will hold the Raleigh Reads program 10-11:30 a.m. the first Saturday of every month at the City of Raleigh Museum, 220 Fayetteville St., Raleigh. Children ages 7 to 13 will discuss books and enjoy crafts, snacks, authors and live readings. To register, call 919-996-2220. The book to be discussed is:

• Saturday, Dec. 7 - “The Christmas Barn” by C.L. Davis.

Book signing

Joel Lane Museum House will hold a book signing and museum shop open house 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 160 S. Saint Mary’s St., Raleigh. Hot wassail will be served, and North Carolina author Nancy Rascoe will speak about and sign her book “The Sandy Banks Live On” at 5 p.m. For more information, call 919-833-3431.
