Area teams win big in 2013

This year has seen several area teams reach the pinnacle of N.C. high school athletics.

Here we recap local state champions from 2013.

Winter 2013

• Millbrook’s girls basketball team, led by eight seniors who all went on to play college basketball, repeated as the NCHSAA 4A state champion in its third trip to the title game in as many years.

• Word of God won the NCISAA 1A boys basketball title.

• Ravenscroft won the NCISAA 3A girls swimming title.

• Wakefield won its third consecutive NCHSAA 4A girls indoor track title, led by championship most valuable performer Tyra Lea, who set a state record in the 300 meters with 38.76 seconds. Wakefield pole vaulter Kristen Lee also broke a state record with her mark of 12 feet, 6 inches.

• Raleigh Charter won the NCHSAA 1A/2A girls swimming title.

• Cardinal Gibbons won the NCHSAA 3A boys swimming title.

• Southeast Raleigh wrestler Phillip Shuler won the 285-pound title in the NCHSAA 4A championship.

Spring 2013

• Cardinal Gibbons’ girls soccer team won the NCHSAA 3A championship.

• Millbrook won the NCHSAA 4A boys dual team tennis title.

• Cardinal Gibbons swept the NCHSAA 3A individual boys tennis titles with Robert Kelly taking the singles championship and Matt Galush and Noah Constantine winning doubles.

• Southeast Raleigh unseated three-time defending champion Wakefield at the NCHSAA 4A girls outdoor track championship.

• St. David’s won the NCISAA 2A boys tennis championship.

Fall 2013

• North Raleigh Christian’s boys soccer team won the NCISAA 3A soccer title.

• St. David’s girls tennis team capped an undefeated season with its second consecutive NCISAA 2A title.

• Grace Christian’s boys cross country team won the NCISAA 2A championship, led by individual winner Alex Dolwick.

• Cardinal Gibbons capped an undefeated season with the NCHSAA 3A volleyball championship to become the first NCHSAA school to win five consecutive titles.

• Wakefield won the NCHSAA 4A volleyball title.

• Cardinal Gibbons won the NCHSAA 3A girls tennis title. Crusaders players Devin Knor and Lizzie Galush won the doubles championship.

• Wakefield’s Susanne Boyden defeated 2012 champion Maggie Kane of Broughton for the NCHSAA 4A tennis singles championship.

• Cardinal Gibbons won its fourth straight NCHSAA 3A girls cross country title, led by individual champion Mary Grace Doggett.

• Broughton’s boys cross country team won its third straight NCHSAA 4A title.
