Baseball: Wakefield 6, Heritage 4

Wakefield baseball takes advantage of offensive opportunities against Heritage

CorrespondentApril 15, 2014

— Wakefield started Friday’s matchup against visiting Heritage with a leadoff single and fielding error by the Huskies, placing the Wolverines with runners in scoring position early on -- a trend that continued throughout the game.

That productivity was a deciding factor in a game that saw the Huskies go 9-for-26 from the plate and the Wolverines bat 7-for-25. Wakefield (6-6, 3-2 Cap Eight), however, converted six of eight runners on either second or third into runs en route to a 6-4 win.

Heritage (12-4, 4-2), in contrast, converted on three of nine scoring opportunities.

“Our approach at the plate tonight was really aggressive and it paid off for us,” Wakefield coach Ed Hall said. “We played some pretty good defense too, so those are two areas we had struggled in and we really put it together tonight.”

With two consecutive conference wins behind the Wolverines, Hall looked forward to the finals stretch of the regular season.

“We feel like we’re just beginning to play,” Hall said. “There have been a lot of injuries and different little things where we were not able to get all of our guys together.

“Against Broughton Wednesday and tonight’s game, we’ve been able to get our guys in the lineup and playing, although we lost Evan Brabrand, our number one pitcher, to a hamstring injury. ... It seems like it’s beginning to come together, knock on wood.”

The Wolverines hit the road this week with games at Leesville Road (10-3, 4-2) Tuesday and Sanderson (8-5, 3-3) Thursday.

Heritage was scheduled to host Broughton Tuesday and play at Leesville Road Thursday.
